How does the Mahindra Supro School Bus perform in extreme weather?

India’s varied climate poses specific challenges for school transportation: some areas can be hot as hell, others are heavy with monsoon rains, and some are mountainous and covered in snow. Schools and parents are interested in the performance of the Mahindra Supro School Bus in such different conditions. But its stability in strong winds, traction on wet or icy roads and ability to cool its batteries in hot climates are questions. Some love its small size to meander through flooded streets, while others fret over its ground clearance in flooded conditions. Another thing they're talking about is the bus's ability to start in very cold weather. Separately, students worry about being comfortable in extreme temperatures on the bus, which is large and has poor ventilation. As climate change could lead to more extreme weather events, the Supro's ability to be used in different circumstances is becoming a more important consideration for schools in different parts of the country.

In Rajasthan, I drive a Supro and it takes the heat like a champ. Even at 45°C outside, the AC keeps the kids cool. It’s small, so it heats up less than the big metal boxes of regular buses.

But try driving one of these in Kerala during monsoon season. I worry about hydroplaning and the wipers can barely keep up. Sometimes it feels like driving a toy car in a bathtub.

You both have it easy. I'm up in Shimla, the Supro does OK on most winter days, but really struggles when we get heavy snow. The tires on more than one occasion have had to be put on chains, and the heater works overtime.

I've worked on these as a mechanic in a few different conditions. But they're pretty robust actually, they've just got their limits. The key is maintenance – change the fluids, check the tires, and you’ll be fine in most weather.

I've got my kids in one and get it pretty stuffy in there in the summer. But the AC works, and it’s just struggling with the number of kids. In extreme heat, I wonder if a bigger bus wouldn’t actually be more comfortable.
