How does the KTM 690 SMC-R compare when it comes to reliability with its rivals?

by geeta kumariover 1 year ago0 views10 comments
Supermoto enthusiasts have been hotly debating the reliability of the KTM 690 SMC-R. The bike has been known for its high performance capabilities, but its dependability has been questioned and compared to Japanese alternatives. But others have reported thousands of trouble-free miles on the bike and praise the bike's robust engine and build quality. Some have had minor electrical gremlins and others, more serious engine issues. Yet another layer of the reliability debate is the bike's maintenance schedule, which is more intensive than some competitors. The rocker arm wear, fuel injection quirks, and build quality are often discussed. The conversation usually goes on to the cost and availability of parts and the level of dealer support across various regions. This reliability question has sparked some interesting discussion regarding the tradeoffs between performance and dependability in the supermoto world.

For a weekend warrior, it’s plenty reliable. I wouldn’t use it as my only daily-use bike.

Its engine is solid, but its electronics can be a bit finicky. It may be a bit of a stretch, but I trust it more than my old DRZ.

Mine has 50,000 hard miles on it and no major issues. Everything depends on how you handle it.

It's a high-strung performance bike. Certainly it needs more care than a basic commuter. That's the trade-off.

A lot of the old issues seem to have been ironed out on the newer models (2019+). Much more dependable now.

I've had both. It’s not unreliable if you stay on top of it, but the KTM needs more attention.

Japanese bikes are definitely more reliable. The KTM is more fun, so it's worth it.

Reliable as you make it. Take care of yourself, and it’ll take care of you. If you neglect it, you will pay the price.

Reliable? Ha! I have had nothing but problems. In the shop constantly for one thing or another.

For 30,000 miles, mine's been bulletproof. As long as you just follow the maintenance schedule, it'll run forever.
