How does the KTM 390 Adventure X fair as a long distance tourer in comparison to its competitors?

by @geeta.autosover 1 year ago0 views10 answers
Many adventure bike enthusiasts need long-distance touring capability. The more budget-friendly KTM 390 Adventure X uses the same engine and basic chassis as the more expensive sibling. But it’s missing some comfort features like the TFT display and comes with different tires. But riders often debate how these changes impact the bike’s touring ability compared to rivals such as the Royal Enfield Himalayan or the BMW G 310 GS. Fuel efficiency, comfort (especially over longer rides), luggage carrying capacity, and overall reliability are among the factors a bike needs to display to be considered a touring bike. In this question I want to find out how the 390 Adventure X fares in real-world touring.

The X is no slouch for touring. A few mods, like a taller windscreen and a better seat, and it can hang with bikes that cost twice as much.

It’s not the best option for pure road touring. If you want to mix in some light off roading on your trips though, the X is hard to beat at its price point.

The BMW G 310 GS has an edge in refinement, but where the road gets twisty or rough, the 390 X feels more capable.

I’ve toured on both the X and the standard 390 Adventure. The X is honestly what I prefer for long trips. The money saved can go towards good luggage, and the simpler dash is less distracting.

Touring is handled well, but buy a good aftermarket seat. After a few hours, the stock one gets uncomfortable.

For touring, the fuel efficiency is amazing. It’s easy to get 400 km on a tank, so fewer stops, more riding.

However, I find the X to be slightly buzzy at highway speeds. Fine for weekend trips, but for serious long-distance touring, I'd look at something bigger.

The 390 X is a rocket ship compared to the Himalayan. But the Himalayan would have an edge on really rough roads; the Himalayan is much more fun on the highways.

It’s a great touring bike, but get those MRF tires out of there ASAP. On long highway stretches, they're not confidence inspiring.

I did a 1000 km trip on my X, and it was surprisingly comfortable. Once you’re used to the basic speedo, the lack of a TFT display isn’t a big deal.
