How does the FZ6R compare to dedicated tourers when used as a long distance tourer?
Although the Yamaha FZ6R is a sport oriented motorcycle by nature, it has earned the reputation among some riders to be a capable all rounder. Debates have ensued about its suitability for long distance touring compared to purpose built touring motorcycles. Riders talk about comfort over long distances, fuel range, luggage capacity, and wind protection. Some say that with a few tweaks, the FZ6R can make a decent tourer, while others say it's not up to scratch in the main areas. It’s a conversation that often includes personal experiences from those who have taken their FZ6Rs on long trips, comparing the FZ6R against dedicated touring bikes they’ve ridden. Bike ergonomics, seat comfort and ability to handle fully loaded touring are often mentioned factors. It also brings up the question of whether it makes more sense to modify an FZ6R for touring, or to buy a purpose built touring bike.

My FZ6R is more comfortable with a Corbin seat and some bar risers than my friend's dedicated tourer. Setting it up right is all.

Long distance touring is a deal breaker without cruise control and heated grips. If you want to use the FZ6R for trips, stick to sport touring.

I’d prefer to tour on an FZ6R than a big, heavy touring bike. You can actually enjoy the twisty roads and it's more fun to ride.

It's all about expectations. For a budget tourer, if you don’t mind more frequent stops and packing as little as possible, the FZ6R can be a great tourer.

It’s no way near a real touring bike. It isn't designed for all day comfort and there aren't luggage options.

Mine was great; I toured Europe on mine. It’s light enough to be fun in the twisties, but stable on the highway. Just need to pack light.

Weekend trips are okay, but for serious touring you want a dedicated bike. The FZ6R is not a comfortable bike or one with very many features for really long hauls.

The FZ6R is a great budget tourer with a few mods like a taller windscreen and some soft luggage. I have done 1000+ mile trips no problem.
