How does the CT125X stack up off road compared to more expensive adventure bikes?

The Bajaj CT125X is usually touted as a bike that can do both the city streets and the rough terrain. It is a budget commuter at heart, but a rugged design and high ground clearance suggest some off road capability. This makes me wonder how it really does when not on the beaten path. But can it really compete on dirt trails and over uneven surfaces? What is its suspension and handling like compared to purpose built adventure bikes that cost an awful lot more? What kind of modifications or upgrades can be made to make it off road worthy? So, let’s take the CT125X off the pavement and explore what it can do for riders looking for adventure on a budget.

It won't compete with a proper ADV bike, but the CT125X can do light off roading surprisingly well. I took mine on a few dirt roads and some mild trails, and it did fine. The good thing is that the high ground clearance.

I wouldn't take it off road too hard. The suspension is pretty basic and you will feel every bump. On gravel roads or well maintained dirt paths it's fine, but anything more technical and you're asking for trouble.

With a few mods it can be made more off road capable. People have got knobbier tires and changed the suspension. It can't turn it into a KTM but it will handle more than you would expect.

I honestly think that people expect too much from a budget commuter. It’s not built for serious off roading. If you really want a real adventure bike, save up, get something that's purpose built for it.

Taking my CT125X on light trails has been fun. It won’t win any races, but it’s up to the job for some weekend exploring. But it won't handle big jumps or deep mud.
