How does the AMT compare with traditional automatics?

Everyone from the car enthusiast to the everyday driver has talked about the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) on the Baleno. Maruti calls this type of transmission as Auto Gear Shift (AGS), which promises an automatic experience with the efficiency of a manual. But its performance and driving experience are a topic of much debate. Complainers say there are jerky shifts and little acceleration, fans rave about the fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs. The debate often revolves around whether the quirks of the AMT are a fair trade off for its lower cost than traditional torque converter or CVT automatics. The real world performance of the Baleno's AMT is what many buyers, especially those new to automatics, will need to know before making that purchase.

It’s a personal preference; I think it depends on how you drive. But the AMT, although as well executed as the Geartronic and almost as competent, can be surprisingly smooth if you're not in a hurry to go anywhere. It’s all about driving adaptation.

If you want a true automatic experience, well save up for a higher end car with a proper auto. A compromise, the AMT shows in daily driving.

In fact, I like the AMT better than a CVT. With the AMT at least you feel like you are shifting gears. I just don’t like the feel of CVTs, they’re droney to me.

While I have driven AMTs from various marques, the Baleno’s is one of the better ones. It's not perfect, but it's a long way behind from the early AMTs that were absolutely awful.

I think people are too hard on AMTs. They are not as smooth as a traditional auto but so much cheaper to maintain. It’s a good option for a budget conscious buyer.

No way, man. I test drove the AMT, and I hated it. You press the accelerator, and it's really annoying when you have to merge onto a highway because there's a lag. The manual version was what I ended up going for.

I have driven AMT Baleno and a friend's CVT Honda and to be honest, the AMT is not bad for city driving. Yeah, it's a little jerky sometimes, but you get used to it and it's great on fuel.
