How does it compare to riding a traditional petrol cruiser?
Cruiser motorcycles are recognized for their unique riding experience: low end torque, vibrations, sound and the way it feels when riding. As an electric cruiser, the ABZO VS01 is different by nature. The instant torque, quiet ride and smooth ride without vibrations are promised. For many riders, however, a cruiser's "character" is very much tied to its combustion engine. Can the VS01 successfully recreate the pleasures of cruiser riding while providing the perks of electric propulsion? How does it do in long rides, city traffic and highway cruising compared to its petrol counterparts? Most importantly though, does it offer the same free flowing connection to the road that’s enjoyed through traditional cruisers?
It's a totally different beast, but in a good way. The instant torque makes it feel more responsive in city traffic. You don't get the vibrations, but the addictive smooth acceleration is addictive.
I have ridden both and as someone who has, I miss the sound and feel of a petrol engine. The VS01 is too quiet and a bit soulless. Efficient, but not very characterful about the fun of cruising.
I was surprised how much I liked the VS01 on long rides. Less fatigue means no vibrations and the linear power delivery allows for easy highway speeds. Riding is more relaxed.
It took some getting used to not having gear shifting, but I love it now. It's much easier to ride in a city, especially in stop and go traffic. No more clutch hand cramps!
I think it provides a slightly different sort of connection to the road. You notice your surroundings more when there's no engine noise. It's a more zen like experience which is nice on scenic routes.
On a hot day, engine heat between your legs is not a plus, but the riding position is spot on for a cruiser. For Indian summers, the longer rides are more comfortable.
I miss the sound. I don’t know what it is, but the rumble of a petrol cruiser can’t be beaten. It’s smooth and quick, without giving me that same visceral rush.
The VS01 was much easier to handle as a new rider. It is more predictable to deliver power and I don’t have to worry about stalling or getting the right gear and can just focus on the road.
It's a trade-off. You get some of the cruiser experience you lose, but you get more in other areas. But the real question is do the gains in efficiency and ease of use outweigh the loss of 'character' for you?
