How dated has the Murano’s unique styling become?

Nissan Murano has always been a vehicle with a distinctive design that is either bold, or polarizing. Its curvaceous body and prominent grille made a splash when it was made available. But automotive design trends are moving on, and Murano's competitors are updating their lineups, so there's talk about whether Murano's look is still fresh and interesting. On one hand some claim that its unique styling has helped it age well, on the other hand, it is beginning to show its age relative to newer, angular styling. Here we ask about how effective have the Murano's aesthetics really been and if they still stand up to what we see in today's automotive designs with the floating roof design, the V motion grille, and the whole shape of the car.

The Murano, I think, still looks fresh. Its unique presence on the road comes from that floating roof design and bold front end. And I appreciate that. It's not trying to be a boxy, generic SUV. It’s the cool aunt of the SUV world, if you will.

The Murano’s design is starting to show its age, let’s be honest. When it came out it was revolutionary, but now it feels a little bloated and over styled compared to sleeker, more modern SUVs. It's not ugly, but it's not getting the attention it used to.

As a car designer, I have to hand it to Nissan for holding the line with the Murano. It’s not about following trends, it’s about setting them. Although it looks much like any other car in parking lots, the sculpted body and unique light signatures still make it stand out. It, however, ages like a fine wine, not for everyone, but it is distinctive.

In fact, I think the Murano looks better now than when it first came out. This was ahead of its time, and now other SUVs are beginning to mimic swoopy designs. The Murano was just early to the party, it's like some fashion trends come back around.

Design wise, the Murano is definitely an acquired taste. Initially I didn’t like it, but it’s grown on me. In a sea of lookalike crossovers, it’s got character. It’s not conventionally beautiful, sure, but it’s interesting, which is something.

I work at a car wash, and I see tons of SUVs every day — the Murano still makes me look. It has the curves in all the right places, and there’s that front end that is unmistakable. While it’s not the newest design, it doesn’t come close to being dated.

The Murano design is the weakest point of it now, I think. Nissan tried too hard to make it unique, and it ends up too overwrought. Both the new Rogue and Pathfinder have much cleaner, much more modern designs. To stay current, the Murano needs a refresh.
