Does the Tour M's focus on commerciality come at the expense of its safety features?
Any vehicle should be safe, but especially so in the case of a commercial vehicle such as the Maruti Tour M which will spend more time on the road and carry multiple passengers. A lot of times you see vehicles that are commercial vehicles and you think that they skimp on safety features to save money. The question now is whether the Tour M adheres to the same safety standards as the consumer facing Ertiga, or if some features have been stripped down or removed. The argument is further made for higher standards of automotive safety given greater frequency of commercial vehicle use and passenger weight. It also addresses the larger issue of safety regulation for commercial vehicles in India and how manufacturers manage the costs vs passenger safety tradeoff.
What I’ve seen is that the Tour M retains most of the Ertiga’s essential safety features. In the current market, Maruti can't afford to compromise on safety.
It is a bit naive to assume that it has the same safety features, I think. To keep prices down commercial vehicles often cut corners. It will surprise me if it is safer than Ertiga.
Period, safety shouldn’t be compromised. If Maruti is selling this for commercial use and not for personal use, they should be adding more safety features to it, and not taking them away.
Fact is, most fleet operators don't care about safety features, they care about running costs. They'll be happy as long as it meets the basic regulatory requirements.
I've driven both, and the truth is I didn't notice any big differences in terms of safety. The Tour M felt as solid as the Ertiga.
Features are definitely important, but so is the build quality. After all, commercial vehicles take a beating, and Maruti may have actually beefed up some aspects of the Tour M.
The real problem here is that there are no detailed safety ratings for commercial vehicles. There is not enough transparency in this segment.
