Does the Tata Punch deliver on fuel efficiency in the real world?

With rising fuel costs and environmental concerns Indian car buyers are especially concerned about fuel efficiency. On paper, the official fuel efficiency figures of the Tata Punch look promising, however, there has been quite some amount of varied reports from owners about how it performs on the road. According to some, some of them get close to the mileage figures promised, while yet others are able to report only miles of much less, mainly in city mode. This sparked discussions on the accuracy of official fuel efficiency tests and how driving styles and traffic conditions can influence consumption, while the Punch's engine coming in tune with the sort of driving Indians do. At the same time, the debate also takes a look at the bigger picture – how performance, efficiency, and cost are balanced in budget vehicles, and whether something like CNG or even hybrid systems could be a better budget solution for buyers.

In mixed driving I’m getting about 14-15 km/l which is not bad, but lower than claimed figures without a doubt. Well for an SUV style vehicle I guess is okay.

In heavy traffic, it is disappointing in fuel efficiency. In Mumbai crawling traffic, I barely get 10 km/l. On highways though is better.

In city driving the AMT version seems more efficient than manual. In reality, I’m pretty happy with how much mileage I’m getting.

It's all about driving style. However, the more delicate you are with the throttle and the more you think about how you're going to use it on the roads, you'll get pretty close to the claimed figures.

More so, I wished Tata had offered some diesel variant too. It has a peppy petrol engine but one that drinks like a Titanic.

That's why I'm thinking about the CNG version the real world efficiency. It costs more in the beginning, but in the end, it should save money.
