Does the Skoda Octavia deserve its reputation for reliability?
While the Octavia is often brought up as a classic example of Skoda's metamorphosis from a provider of questionable build quality to a brand worth considering, the Czech firm has come a long way. Most owners note the car’s durability and low maintenance costs, compared to some other European brands. Nevertheless, doubts remain about long term reliability, particularly in respect of complex components such as the DSG transmission and some of the electrical systems. I want to find out which part of the Octavia is reality and which is myth. It uncovers real world ownership experiences, the things to look out for when buying, and how the Octavia compares against its rivals in terms of dependability and cost of ownership over time.
The Octavia has been bulletproof on my 2015. It just keeps going, regular servicing.
For a European car it's reliable, but don't expect Toyota reliability. Eventually, things will go wrong.
The chassis and engine are solid. The hit or miss is the electronics.
My old Honda has had less issues than my Octavia. It’s nothing major, just lots of little niggles.
If you keep it, it deserves the reputation. You don’t want to skimp on services because that’s asking for trouble.
I’ve heard horror stories, but mine’s been great. I think you can see a lot in how the owner treats it.
The Octavia feels a lot more robust and less likely to fail at expensive things than my old Audi was.
