Does the KTM Duke 890 R live up to its ‘scalpel’ nickname on the track?
The Duke 890 R is marketed by KTM as 'The Scalpel' because of its precise handling and track-ready performance. With this nickname, you know what to expect from it on a circuit, especially being a naked bike. The 890 R has track enthusiasts debating whether it can really hold its own against dedicated sportbikes or if it’s more of a track day occasional. Track prowess of the bike involves many factors, including ergonomics, suspension adjustability, and power delivery. There are riders who praise its agility and user-friendly nature and other riders who argue that it doesn’t have a fairing and its upright position restricts its potential at higher speeds. The discussion usually centers around if the 890 R makes the right compromise between street usability and track performance and how it stacks up against more track-oriented alternatives at this price point.

The engine is a bit flat compared to a true supersport on track, but everything else—suspension and brakes—is top-notch.

For street and occasional track use, I'd say it lives up to the hype. Track rats who are dedicated will want something more focused.

That 'scalpel' nickname is right on. It's so precise, so easy to flick around; you feel like a better rider than you are.

It's a jack of all trades, but master of none. Good on track, but not great. But it’s more fun than most bikes you’ll find out there.

On my 890 R, I've embarrassed plenty of sportbike riders. The rider is all that matters, not the fairing.

Wind protection is a real issue at high speeds. It’s more of a canyon carver than a true track weapon.

Beginners and intermediate riders will love it, but pros will outgrow it quickly on the track.

Absolutely! It's so nimble and precise it's embarrassing compared to most sportbikes.
