Does the KTM 1390 Super Duke R’s performance match its reliability?
KTM has a reputation for being one of the most forward-thinking motorcycle companies, but that sometimes comes at the expense of reliability, particularly in their earlier models. Their flagship naked bike, the 1390 Super Duke R, is the latest evolution of that bike, with impressive power figures and cutting-edge electronics. But potential buyers and enthusiasts worry about how high-performance machines fare with typical use. Riders are divided on whether the electrical systems or premature wear on some components is an issue or whether the bike is durable. Modern motorcycles, especially those with advanced electronic systems, are often much more complex, which in turn can increase the number of potential failures. Also, the engine and the bike as a whole will be high-strung and may have a narrower performance envelope and require more frequent maintenance or not be so forgiving of neglect compared to more conservative designs. This question is aimed at finding out in real-world experiences & opinions on the 1390 Super Duke R's reliability, taking into account build quality, how much maintenance is required, and long-term ownership costs.
I've had my 1390 for six months now, and it's been rock solid. Everything was fine, maintenance as one would expect. KTM has really improved.
Any bike this powerful will naturally require more attention than your average commuter. However, if you take care of it, it is just as reliable as the competition.
I've heard mixed things. My buddy had electrical gremlins with his, but the dealer sorted it out under warranty. Seems hit or miss.
I was worried about reliability, having come from Japanese bikes. My 1390, however, has been surprisingly trouble-free. Don't skimp on oil changes, though!
It's bulletproof engine but some of the electronics can be finicky. It’s nothing major, but there are little annoyances that pop up from time to time.
I don't think the reliability concerns are overblown. KTM’s modern bikes are a lot better than they used to be. You're fine as long as you follow the maintenance schedule.
Put 15,000 miles on mine in a year. So far, no problems, but I am quite meticulous about maintenance. Proper care is rewarded with these bikes.
