Does the European styling and driving dynamics of the Skoda Kylaq excuse its premium over more feature loaded rivals?

It's a highly competitive segment in India when it comes to the compact SUV, with a lot of options with a lot of features at different price points. The Skoda Kylaq enters this market as a more premium product, built around its European design philosophy and its superior driving dynamics. But the Kylaq is priced higher than many of its rivals, however. In most ways it is a lovely car, offering a refined drive and feeling of prestige shared by European brands, but like most European luxury machines it falls short when it comes to price (for example, the Hyundai Xcient comes in cheaper) and also provides fewer features than cheaper alternatives from Kia, Hyundai or Tata. The result is that car enthusiasts and potential buyers are all debating what the Kylaq’s true value proposition actually is. While some would argue that the driving experience and the actual build quality can justify the premium over other vehicles, others would argue that in a feature based market like India, Kylaq may just not justify the premium over others. One of the topics of discussion is whether the part of the European engineering and design that cannot be seen, quantified, or measured can overcome the more visible, measurable, and quantifiable parts of the competitors.

Absolutely worth it. In a different league when it comes to driving dynamics, the Kylaq has little to fear from most rivals. When you're behind the wheel you can really feel the European engineering.

I disagree. For most buyers in India, features matter more than the driving dynamics. So, why spend more money on a Kylaq when you can buy a fully loaded Venue or Sonet for the same amount?

It's a tough call. It is definitely more premium in feel but it's very hard to justify the price when you can see how much feature list you are getting in something like a Kia Sonet top variant.

For enthusiasts, yes. Probably not for the average buyer. Whether you want driving experience or features, it really depends.

I feel like people underestimate the importance of good driving dynamics in day to day use. The Kylaq will have fewer features, but it’ll be more fun to drive every day.

After all, you’re also paying for the badge. What you are paying extra for is that Skoda has a more premium image than Maruti or Tata.

It’s not about features or driving dynamics. The Kylaq feels better than most rivals for overall quality. It’s harder to quantify but you definitely get value out of it.

If you are going to keep the car for a long time, I would say it’s worth it. The feature laden but less refined alternative will probably age less gracefully than the build quality and driving experience.
