Does the BYD Dolphin have the performance to excite enthusiastic drivers?

Electric vehicles often have very different performance characteristics than traditional combustion engine cars, and this leads to debates about what 'good' performance means in an EV. While not referred to as a sports car, the BYD Dolphin has caused people to talk about its acceleration, handling and overall driving characteristics. For some of the drivers, EVs offer the instant torque of the powertrain that makes for a thrilling driving experience; others will miss having to use a clutch or the sound of an engine revving. Inevitably, the Dolphin's performance is pitted against the performance of EVs and gas powered cars in the same price range. This debate ultimately challenges whether or not traditional performance metrics ring out true in a world that has moved to electric and whether driving enjoyment has changed with our new world.

The Dolphin is more than adequate for an affordable EV. It feels zippy around town because of the instant torque.

If you’re coming from a hot hatch or a sports car, you might be disappointed. It’s plenty quick for most daily driving.

The Dolphin's performance is surprisingly fun to me. Smooth, quiet acceleration is addictive, but it's no Tesla.

There is little engine noise to get used to, but the responsive throttle more than makes up for it. It's a different kind of fun.

If I were an enthusiastic driver, I'd look elsewhere. The Dolphin is not about performance, it’s about efficiency.

In fact, I like the Dolphin’s power delivery better than my old gas car. It’s more predictable and easier to modulate in traffic.

It performs fine, but it handles a bit better. Some rivals feel a bit numb in the corners.

Having been a petrolhead myself, I was skeptical, but the Dolphin changed my mind. Instant, silent acceleration is a satisfying thing.

It’s quick enough to be fun, but not so powerful that you feel the urge to speed all the time. It’s a good balance for daily use.
