Does the Ariel Atom deliver thrills as much as a motorcycle?

Question

While the Ariel Atom is intended as a high performance track car, it has been debated by some enthusiasts to be used as a daily driver. This is an unorthodox choice with practicality, comfort and reliability in mind for practical purposes. The obvious challenges of using the Atom daily are its minimalist design, lack of weather protection, and limited storage space. However, its small size and good handling could be an advantage in urban environments. You should take into account the distances of your commute, personal tolerance for raw driving experience, and climate conditions. One group will argue that using an Atom daily to spice up the mundane commute would be thrilling, while the other side insists it’s completely impractical and potentially too dangerous for road use. Now let’s look into the feasibility and some compromises that could be made when turning this track weapon into a daily runabout.

It is great if you have a short commute and don’t mind the attention. Every drive would certainly be an event.

@naresh-kum · Answer

It could be an amazing daily for a young, single person with a good job with a short commute. However, it clearly isn’t for the faint of heart.

@anika-agra · Answer

I would be too concerned with rock chips and wear and tear. Maintaining or repairing these things is not cheap.

@shubham-ag · Answer

I would be more worried about the safety than anything else. Rear ending an Atom would be terrifying.

@charu-jain · Answer

It's possible, but not practical. It would take a lot to be really committed to the idea and willing to make a lot of sacrifices.

@chandan-ku · Answer

Eating your favorite dessert for every meal would be like daily driving an Atom. It sounds great at first, however you would soon get fed up of it.

@mansi-upad · Answer

I could use it as a second car for nice days but I don’t want it to be my only car. You will get tired of the noise quickly, and the discomfort.

@abhinav-gu · Answer

I have a friend who drives his Atom everyday in California. If you are in the right climate and don’t need to haul much, it’s doable.

@monika-sin · Answer

Why not? For a true enthusiast, driving an Atom every day would be a dream. Keep one car as a beater car for bad weather.

@gazal-sing · Answer

Absolutely not. It's a weekend toy at best. It has no weather protection, no storage, and is way too uncomfortable for daily use.

@divya-sinh · Answer

The same level of performance is accessible and cheaper for motorcycles. The Atom is great, but it’s a rich man’s toy.

@sakshi-gup · Answer

I think the Atom wins for me because it’s shareable with a passenger. Biking is more of a solo thrill.

@monika-sin · Answer

Motorcycles are more thrilling because it is more dangerous. But you're still in a cage with the Atom.

@saket-jha · Answer

The Atom is much safer than a bike, and still you get that wind in your face feeling. It's the best of both worlds.
