Does the 22Motors Flow’s cloud connectivity feature raise some privacy concerns?

Question

The 22Motors Flow eScooter is cloud connected, and users can access several features from their smartphones remotely. This also includes real time tracking, performance monitoring as well as over the air updates for the scooter's software. Even though it’s convenient and functional, these features give rise to the concern of data privacy and security. In a time when data breaches and unauthorized access to your own personal information seems to be becoming the norm, the prospect of a constantly connected vehicle tracking your travels and habits may not sit too well. Is the trade off of privacy for the benefits of cloud connectivity worth it? What are the safeguards in place for user information collected by the Flow, and how secure is that data? But let’s take a look at what it means to have a cloud connected scooter and if the convenience is worth the privacy concerns.

@deepak-khu · Accepted Answer

Let’s face it, most people will always choose convenience over privacy. Most riders won’t care about data collection as long as the cloud features work well.

@bhawesh-ku · Answer

I think it boils down to trust. Do we trust 22Motors with our personal data? They have to be more transparent about their data policies.

@abhinit-ku · Answer

You guys are missing the bigger picture. This could be a game-changer in fleet management and rental service. While the privacy trade-off might be worth it for the sake of advancement of urban mobility as a whole.

@agha-saqui · Answer

If your data has been breached before, you're likley to be wary of any device that is constantly collecting your information. The Flow is fantastic, but the cloud features scare me.

@amar-jain · Answer

I'm on the fence. The cool features, but I wish there was an option to use the scooter in "offline" mode if I don't want to be tracked.

@vibhu-goel · Answer

Of course, privacy issues aside, the cloud connectivity has saved my bacon more than once. Priceless is being able to locate my scooter when I forget where I parked.

@aditi-vars · Answer

22Motors isn't going to spy on us, I think we're overreacting. The data is being used to make their products and services better. This is no different than what our phones already do.

@deepak-khu · Answer

I think the benefits outweigh the risks for me. It’s worth it to be able to get OTA updates and improve my scooter over time. Use strong passwords and turn on two factor authentication!

@sachin-sha · Answer

As a cybersecurity professional, there are serious concerns. Hackers can enter through any connected device. What if somebody remotely controls your scooter?

@reena-yada · Answer

The Flow cloud features are awesome! It's super convenient being able to track my scooter and to check its status on my phone. Privacy isn’t too much of a concern for me - if you use a smartphone, you’re already being tracked.
