Do the Kia Sportage's driver assistance features help or hinder?
Kia Sportage includes a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning. These technologies are intended to boost safety and convenience, but some are over sensitive and intrusive, and the drivers set about to block or minimize the detection of such technology. Complaints have mounted about constant beeping, steering wheel vibrations and automatic interventions that can be startling. However, proponents say the first two features make driving safer and less tiring. This begs the question on how these systems are implemented and customized in the Sportage.
The driver assists in my Sportage are something I love. Adaptive cruise control is a life saver for highway driving, and lane keep assist just adds that extra layer of safety. They’re sure a bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to them they’re super helpful.
I find them honestly more annoying than helpful. Sometimes the forward collision warning goes off for no reason and the lane keep assist is too aggressive. Most of them I end up turning off, which defeats the purpose.
It's a mixed bag. Great features like blind spot monitoring are some of them. Some of them, like the lane keep assist, can be a little too much. I really wish we could customize the sensitivity of each system individually.
Being a highway driver, I absolutely love the ADAS features. On long trips, they reduce fatigue and have probably saved me from a few close calls. Yes, it has a learning curve, but it's a good one for added safety.
I did not believe it at first, but I now appreciate the driver assist. They’re not perfect, but they’ve helped me become a more aware driver. But you can always turn them off if they are bothering you on a specific drive.
