Could the TecPac model actually bring down the price of EVs and make them accessible?

Bajaj's introduction of TecPac subscription model for the Chetak Urbane electric scooter is a unique model for pricing EVs and determining which features an owner can use. Bajaj may be able to offer lower base price of the scooters by offering the features, which they can make as optional and available on subscription. If it works, it could bring the initial purchase of an EV into the financial reach of a greater number of consumers. The model lets buyers select which features they want and when they want them, and lets them pay over time. But this also begs the question: what are the long term costs of ownership and how affordable is the vehicle really? Let’s think about how this model might play out differently for each segment of consumers – from budget buyers to tech enthusiasts – and whether it can be a stepping stone for wider EV adoption in India. A key factor in determining success and potential spread of this model in the EV market is likely to be the balance between upfront affordability and long term value.

I'm skeptical. We're going towards a future where we don’t really own anything in our vehicles.

This could be awesome for people who only need some of the features seasonally. If you are in a flat area, why pay for hill assist?

But I don't think that it's going to catch on, but it's an interesting experiment. Humans like to know what they’re getting upfront.

I'm for it, if it gets more EVs on the road. However we have to reduce emissions.

But I worry it's going to turn into a two tier system where only rich riders can get all the safety features.

They could do it if they provide a way to permanently unlock features after a given time. Like a rent-to-own model.

It may be for some, but it feels like nickel and diming customers. This isn’t a great way to build brand loyalty.

It’s just a trick to make the sticker price appear lower. What matters most is total cost of ownership.

It's a smart way to get more people into EVs, I think. When you can afford it, upgrade; start with the basics.

While it might make the purchase price more affordable, it will probably end up costing more down the road.
