Could the Reva E2O be successful if it came back today with modern tech?

Since the Reva E2O was discontinued, the electric vehicle landscape in India has changed quite a bit. The technology has improved, the infrastructure has grown and awareness among consumers has increased. But small EVs have also been successful in other markets – like China – demonstrating there may be demand for compact electric cars. Could Mahindra relaunch the E2O concept today with contemporary battery tech, motor efficiency and features, but keeping with the original’s compact city-car philosophy, and would it find success in today’s market? Look at urban congestion, parking problems and the rise of EV acceptance among younger, tech savvy buyers.

Absolutely! If I give you a modern E2O with 200km range, fast charging, and a price tag under 10 lakhs, they will sell like hotcakes. Because of its small size and ease of parking, it is perfect for crowded cities where people want something easy to park but don't want to buy a Nano.

I'm skeptical. The Indians still prefer bigger cars, and with the Tata already dominating the affordable EV space, there may not be any space for a tiny city EV. It would have to be really cheap to compete.

They could make it work, they just need to make it look more premium. Make it small, but make it a smart urban commuter for young professionals with an upmarket interior and lots of tech, not a budget option.

Now might be the perfect timing. Fuel prices are soaring and traffic is getting worse; a small, efficient EV makes a lot of sense. They would have to get the pricing right – it will have to be much cheaper than the Tigor EV for the car to succeed.

I think it would do well, particularly if they offered it as a subscription. And while young people in cities probably don’t want to own a car outright, they’d love an affordable, all inclusive EV subscription for their daily commute.

It could be a hit but not in a personal vehicle. I can certainly see it working great as a shared mobility solution, sort of electric Zoom cars across the city. You can park easily and it’s great for short trips.

They would have to expand the concept a bit. Make it a little bit bigger, add a little back seat but keep it under 3.5 meters for tax benefits. It’s basically an electric WagonR — practical but with a modern EV twist.

If not, why not make it a modular platform? It would be a base model as a cheap runabout but offer add ons such as better batteries, more powerful motors, or luxury interiors. Let people make it their own to their needs and budgets.
