Could the Mahindra Naya Commander have been India's iconic off roader?
Designed ruggedly and in 4x4 configuration, the Mahindra Naya Commander stood the promise of being an iconic off road vehicle in India. It was a unique combination of practicality (with its 9 seater configuration) and off road ability that could have appealed to urban and rural customers alike. However, it did not ever manage the urban legend status of many others like the Maruti Gypsy or the Mahindra Thar. Could this have been a missed opportunity for Mahindra to build a truly iconic Indian off roader? Could the Naya Commander be the cult classic it deserved to be, or did something fundamental stand in its way? Would the Naya Commander have become India's answer to the Land Rover Defender or Jeep Wrangler if Mahindra had continued to develop and refine the concept?
No way, it was too bulky and underpowered to be a serious off roader.
Absolutely! With a few tweaks, it could have been the India's Defender.
It could have been, but Mahindra didn't push marketing or development.
Iconic? Maybe. Practical? Definitely. Perfect for large families who liked adventure.
Nah, the Thar was always going to be Mahindra’s iconic offroader.
It could have built a strong enthusiast following if it had been more modular and, well, customizable.
It's just too much of a family car to be a true off road icon.
It could have been a beast off road with better suspension and a more powerful engine.
It was just too polarizing to ever become truly iconic.
They might have built a reputation if they had sponsored some off road racing teams using modified Commanders.
