Can the Tata Nexon CNG be a game changer for the eco-conscious SUV lover?
by Harshover 1 year ago0 views5 comments
India's first CNG powered compact SUV has made its entry, the Tata Nexon CNG is creating waves. That has got people talking about whether this could be the perfect middle ground between petrol/diesel SUVs and fully electric vehicles. While there are some folks super excited about the potential fuel savings, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and perhaps most of all, the supposedly rev'happy nature of CNG, there are also plenty of skeptics who just don't see CNG making much sense in an SUV. Besides, can a CNG SUV give us the kind of punch we expect out of the Nexon? Not to mention safety concerns, given how CNG is known. Besides, if the government is seeking to promote electric vehicles, is investing in CNG technology a good long term step? The debate about it has been stirring with car enthusiasts and environmentally oriented buyers.

I think it's a brilliant idea for fleet operators and taxi services. And they can provide an SUV experience at much lower running costs. The compromises may not be worth the savings for personal use, though.

Tata is simply clever marketing, but I am not certain it the future. Fortunately, EV infrastructure is improving rapidly, and CNG might well be obsolete before it even takes off in the SUV segment.

It's a step in the right direction but I wouldn’t call that a game changer. When we have affordable electric SUVs with good range – that’s the real revolution. But this is feeling more like a stopgap.

I'm not so sure. CNG tanks take up a lot of boot space and outside major cities, it is a pain to locate CNG stations. Some may benefit from it, but I don’t think that is practical for everyone.

Absolutely! Nexon CNG is a total game changer. It's taking eco tech to the SUV segment and, crucially, without the range anxiety of EVs. CNG is also much cheaper than petrol, which is a win win for your wallet and ultimately, your planet.
