Can the Royal Enfield be replaced by the ABZO VS01 as the bike for Indian touring enthusiasts?
Many Indian motorcycle enthusiasts have preferred Royal Enfield as their choice of long distance touring motorcycles for as long as I can remember. The cult of the brand is built on its classic styling, thumping engine note, and a sense of adventure it brings to the riding experience. However, the ABZO VS01 arrives today with modern electric technology, delivering similar cruiser aesthetics with the benefits of electric propulsion – lower running costs, zero emissions and instant torque. Yet, touring on a bike powered by electricity introduces a host of new issues, the most common of which are operating without a way to charge the bike or feeling anxious about the bike running out of electric power. Can the VS01, with its 250cc power and all other features, really be a viable alternative to the tried and trusted Royal Enfield for those long highway trips and mountain adventures? Can it create the same kind of emotional connect, the same kind of community it couldn't over decades that Royal Enfield has?
No way! Bikes are not just bikes in Royal Enfield, it’s a culture. The VS01 may be efficient, but it will never replace the soul of a Bullet on the highway.
It's not about replacing, it's about living together. For shorter tours or rides in which charging is easy, the VS01 could be great. The Enfield still rules for those deep Himalayan adventures.
With better charging infrastructure I can see the VS01 becoming a real contender. The zero emissions and low running cost could be a game changer for budget conscious tourers.
The VS01 could actually help improve the touring experience by the virtue of it being silent. Can you picture yourself cruising down scenic routes and actually hearing nature, rather than engine noise?
Overnight, Royal Enfield can not replace its decades of touring heritage. If ABZO plays its cards right though, and builds a strong community, they could very well create their own touring culture.
Reliability will be the real test. If the VS01 can show itself to be as tough and reliable as an Enfield on long trips, it can win over a lot of skeptics.
I believe it’s about the type of touring. If you’re taking weekend getaways or if you just have a lot of charging stops on the way, then the VS01 could fit perfectly. Well for those month long expeditions to Ladakh? Enfield still wins.
In fact, the VS01’s instant torque might actually make it better for mountain roads. With no more worrying about being in the right gear for those hairpin bends.
It’s not just the bike, it’s the ecosystem. The aftermarket and a service center network are massive with Royal Enfield. To really compete, ABZO needs to build that kind of support system.
I’ve been an Enfield rider for a long time so the VS01 is piquing my curiosity. If they can work out their charging anxiety, it could be a great option for riders who want the cruisability of an old school bike without the headaches of maintenance.
