Can the Mahindra XUV.e8's all wheel drive system be a true off roader or just a mall crawler?
Considering it is an electric SUV in this segment, Mahindra has confirmed that the XUV.e8 will come with an all wheel drive system, which is a big thing. This has started conversations about the vehicle’s real off road capabilities. AWD certainly improves traction and handling in certain conditions, but there's some debate as to whether or not it turns the XUV.e8 into a true off road vehicle or if it's just a marketing feature for urban drivers who seldom leave the paved roads. All depends on factors including ground clearance, approach and departure angles alongside the durability of the electric powertrain in tougher terrain. The other question is how does an electric AWD system perform compared to a traditional mechanical AWD system in terms of performance and reliability in rough terrain.
I bet the XUV.e8 will be a beast off road considering Mahindra’s off road heritage. Electric torque plus AWD? I’d like to sign up for some muddy adventures.
Seriously though, 99% of these will never get to see anything tougher than a speed bump. It’s just for show, to justify the price tag.
I'm skeptical. Mahindra will not risk the battery pack, I doubt they will put true off road capabilities in an electric car. It'd probably only handle light trails at best.
I’m sold as long as it can take the pothole ridden city roads and the occasional flooded street. Real life requires more than that, who needs it?
It's all about the software. If Mahindra can get the traction control and power distribution right, it could catch a lot of people off guard off road.
I think it will be somewhere in the middle. Not a rock crawler by any means, but good enough for some light off roading and great for bad weather.
The real question is, who is going to spend ?30 lakh on an electric SUV and actually take it off road? It’s more likely to be seen at charging stations than on trails.
