Can the Hyundai Tucson's futuristic design pass the test of time?

With a bold, avant garde design, the current generation Hyundai Tucson is a departure from many of its competitors. It does make a statement though with its unique front grille that incorporates hidden daytime running lights, sharp body lines and distinctive rear light signature. But others say a design that's this bold may age fast or become dated with trends. It's also a question of how well these design elements will stand up physically over time with the more complex lighting systems built into the grille. But supporters say that the Tucson's design gives it a premium look that is punching above its price point and helps it stand out in a segment that is crowded. The question is whether Hyundai chose the right path with such a bold design direction or not, it would have been better for long term appeal and resale value.

It's awesome design! It’s great to see a mainstream brand take risks. Yes, it might be dated in a few years, but it’s not another boring blob on wheels.

I worry about how it will age, but it looks cool now. Remember how some of those cars from the early 2000s that were over styled aged so quickly? I worry the Tucson will go the way of the Ford.

What sold me on the Tucson is the design. It was way more expensive looking than what it was, and now, a year later, I still get complimented on it. And who cares if it looks dated in 10 years? Anyhow, most people don't keep cars that long.

I'm worried that front grille design isn't very practical. If one of those hidden lights goes out, what then? It could be an expensive repair down the line, seems.

You have to love it or hate it, but it stands out. I like that Hyundai took a chance and made something different in a sea of look alikes.

I think the overall shape will hold up well, but some of the more extreme details will look a little silly in a few years. I’d rather have something interesting than another forgettable design, though.

I’ve owned both ‘safe’ designs and more out there ones and I can tell you that driving something different is always more fun. If it ages poorly, at least you had some fun while it was fresh.
