Can the Classic 500 cope with the modern traffic?
A vintage design and older technology in the Royal Enfield Classic 500 often brings up questions as to how it will perform in today’s traffic conditions. It has a bigger engine than its 350cc counterpart, but it is a very different animal in terms of power delivery and overall performance characteristics than a modern motorcycle. Its laid back nature has riders arguing that the torque heavy engine isn't enough for quick overtakes or highway cruising, while others argue that it is ideal for leisurely rides. Weight of the bike, braking performance and handling in urban environments are also facts to consider. It has its classic charm, some say it compensates for any performance shortcomings, while others feel it's out of place in today's fast paced modern traffic scenarios.
No problem at all. With plenty of torque for city riding it can cruise at highway speeds just fine.
It can’t cope with fast highways. When you are always going at full throttle trying to keep up it is not great for the engine or nerves.
It's actually great in the city. It zips through traffic easily thanks to the torque. Long highway stretches are a bit of a challenge.
I never had issues commuting daily on mine. It's not the fastest, but it can more than handle traffic.
If you don’t mind not being in a hurry, forget about quick overtakes or high speed cruising. It's just not built for that.
It performs much better with some mods like a better air filter and exhaust. It's a bit underwhelming stock.
For most riding situations I find it perfectly adequate. It's not a sports bike, but then it wasn't meant to be.
