Can one really buy a trusted and built to last vehicle for so little money?
Since its launch, the Mahindra Thar has seen a price increase, which has put it in a segment that buyers expect a certain level of quality and reliability from. However, build quality and long term reliability for Thar hasn't been mixed. While some owners have had fit and finish issues (panel gaps, interior rattles), mechanical problems with the suspension, electronics, etc, have also been reported. However, a lot of Thar owners sing paeans about the car’s toughness and ability to go through tough conditions without breaking down. The issue of quality extends to that of the Thar's quality, and to Mahindra's manufacturing standards and after sales service in general. The Thar’s unique position in the market is justified for some, while others feel it doesn’t warrant its price, as it doesn’t live up to the quality of similarly priced vehicles from other manufacturers. As such, there has been ongoing discussion about value for money and tradeoffs between specialized capabilities and overall build quality.
I think the build quality on the Thar is decent but not great for the money. It’s not about premium materials or fit and finish, you’re paying for the off road capability.
