But why did Maruti never launch a diesel version of the Gypsy?

For years now, enthusiasts have been discussing why the Maruti Gypsy never had a diesel variant. Since diesel engines have been popular in India, especially for vehicles used in rural and off road conditions, it is a missed opportunity. What could have led Maruti to continue with petrol engines on the Gypsy? Think about what a diesel engine could have afforded us in terms of torque and fuel efficiency, especially when it came to off road use. Could a diesel Gypsy have altered its market position and its life as a production vehicle? Talk about problems that could have taken place in the development of it to the diesel variant, and the influence it might have had with regards to the character and performance of the vehicle. Would a diesel Gypsy have answered some of the criticisms of the petrol model, or would it have introduced new ones?

The fact that Maruti missed offering a diesel Gypsy is something that just went down the drain. That would've been perfect for rural markets and off roading. It would have been even more popular with the fuel efficiency and torque.
