Are people just lying about the Hyundai Elantra's reliability?

Hyundai Elantra has been one of the most popular compact cars for years but the debate is on whether the car is reliable. There are some owners who swear by their Elantras, saying they’ve had zero issues after hundreds of thousands of miles. Some say they have frequent problems and expensive repairs. Hyundai’s past engine problems and recalls appear to be the source of the controversy. But newer models seem to have dealt with many of these issues. But the car's affordability and features make it an attractive option, and it still carries some of its old reputation for unreliability. Are we justified in these concerns, or is the Elantra more reliable than its critics imply?

I’ve had my 2018 Elantra now at over 200k miles and it’s been rock solid. It’s just regular maintenance, and it keeps on ticking. I do think some of the reliability issues are blown out of proportion or reflect older models.

The complete opposite has been my experience. My engine light came on in my 2021 Elantra with only 15k miles on it and I've been waiting months for the parts due to all the recalls. It's been a nightmare.

It really depends on the year and engine I think. So far, the newer Smartstream engines seem to be doing well, but it’s too early to tell long term. Maybe if you're worried, look at a certified pre owned with some warranty left.

No car is perfect, let’s be real. It's hard to beat Hyundai's 10/100k warranty, however. For a long time, if something goes wrong, you’re covered. I’ll pay a lot for that peace of mind.

I've owned both a Toyota and a Hyundai and honestly the Elantra has been as reliable as my old Corolla. A lot of it, I think, is to do with how well you maintain the car. Regular oil changes and maintaining the schedule are a long way.

Hyundai’s reputation might be improving reliability, but the resale value still takes a hit. If you’re planning on selling the car a few years down the road, this is something to keep in mind.

I work at a dealership, and we see a lot less problems with Elantras than we do with some other models. The vast majority of horror stories you hear online are the vocal minority.
