Are our kids really safe in the Mahindra Supro School Bus?

Parents have a top concern about school transportation, and it is safety. There is a lot of debate around whether or not the safety features of the Mahindra Supro School Bus are enough. Some say it's so compact that it's more maneuverable in tight spaces, and some worry that this makes it less stable. How does this bus meet Indian safety standards and compare to international standards? Its roll over protection and side impact resistance are also questioned. Often parents and school administrators talk about trade offs between cost and other safety measures they can implement. Some praise the bus's speed governor, but others say it may be a hindrance in an emergency. As traffic grows and road safety becomes a concern in India, the Supro’s safety features are still a hot topic of discussion in parent teacher meetings and forums online.

I've been driving one of these two years now for a school and I can tell you it's pretty solid. I have a couple of times in the rain saved my bacon with the anti skid braking system. And the speed limiter means I can't go nuts if I wanted to. It's not a tank, but it works.

Are you kidding me? I'm always worried about my neighbor's kid riding in one. Compared to the big yellow buses you see in American movies, it's so small. What if a truck hits it? Even if it costs more, I'd feel a lot better if they would use a full size bus.

Guys, let's be real. It's safer than half the rickety vans and auto rickshaws that are used as school transport in many places. This thing at least has regular seats and seatbelts. Even if it’s not perfect it’s a step in the right direction.

I'm an engineer and I have looked at the specs. All the government safety standards are met by the Supro. However, compared to some other countries our standards are pretty low. It's 'safe', but it's definitely not perfect.

So as a school principal I had to make the call on these buses. It was a tough decision, but we went with the Supro. It’s a balance between safety, cost, and practicality. We don't have money for those fancy imported buses and this is a lot better than the vans we were using before. Plus, the parents are happy with the change.
