Are Hiace vans a good platform for camper conversions?

The Toyota HiAce has gained a reputation as being a great camper van conversion, especially for the DIY crowd and small conversion companies. However, its boxy shape gives you a blank canvas to work with when it comes to layout designs, and the reputation for reliability makes it an attractive option for those who plan on long trips or full time van life. But the debate is there whether the HiAce is suitable for camper conversions. Different HiAce models and generations all vary significantly in factors such as interior height, overall size and payload capacity. Some people favor new models for greater comfort as well as modern amenities, while others can’t get past the simplicity and ease of maintenance associated with older models. Model year and region also play a part in the availability of parts and aftermarket accessories designed particularly for camper conversions. On the other hand, fans of van life discuss about cost effectiveness of converting a HiAce against buying a purpose built campervan or converting other van models.

Absolutely! Its boxy shape makes the most of interior space. I converted mine and couldn’t be happier.

The low roof models are too cramped for comfortable living, but they're okay. Choose a high top or a different van.

They’re great for weekend trips, but I wouldn’t want to live in one full time. There is not enough width compared to some other vans.

I love my HiAce camper. It is reliable, easy to work on and parts are easily available. Perfect for my needs.

In the current market, they’re good, but overpriced. Other van models can get you more bang for your buck.

Simple conversions are great with the older models. The newer ones have more creature comforts, but are harder to modify.

It depends on your height. It's a bit cramped for being 6'2". Although my shorter friends love their HiAce campers.
