Are aftermarket parts and modifications really needed to upgrade the performance of the Interceptor 350?

There’s a large and passionate community of owners who like to customize their bikes, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 350. The stock bike is still being debated as to whether the bike needs improvements or if it is best to enjoy it as is from the factory. Aftermarket exhausts, air filters and ECU tunes are some riders' go to for a performance boost, but others claim they compromise reliability and character. We discuss suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, and ergonomic changes such as seat and handlebar swaps. It’s hotly debated among Interceptor owners whether these modifications are necessary for enjoyment or are just fun extras.

Absolutely not! Out of the box, the Interceptor 350 is great. The stock setup was done well by Royal Enfield and messing with it just invites problems.

A couple of choice mods can really wake the bike up. If you get a good exhaust and air filter combo, you will hear and feel the difference without spending a fortune.

That depends on what you want from the bike. Stock is fine for casual riding. However, if you're after every last bit of performance, there's lots of scope for improvement with some carefully picked upgrades.

A first rule I'd say is to focus on ergonomic mods. Most things that will make you enjoy riding more than you currently do are things like a more comfortable seat or adjustable levers that will annoy no one other than you.

I personally believe half the fun of owning an Interceptor is to tinker with it! Start small – a tail tidy or new mirrors – and see where it leads you.

The only mod you need is a good set of tires. It’s all personal preference and chasing marginal gains.

A suspension upgrade is what makes the biggest difference, I've found. And it changed the handling and made the bike feel so much more planted in a corner.
