Against other automatic options in its segment, how does the Exter's AMT fare?
In India, automatic transmission is becoming more common, particularly in cities with a heavy traffic. The Hyundai Exter offers an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) option, which is a budget friendly way to have an automatic like experience. But AMTs have a reputation for being jerky, slow to respond, compared to traditional automatics, or more advanced versions such as CVTs or DCTs. There are some buyers who are worried about the driving experience with an AMT, and some who enjoy the cost savings and better fuel economy. All of this has set people wondering if the Exter's AMT is refined enough for everyday use, how it stacks up against rivals like the Tata Punch AMT, and if it's worth choosing over a manual.
I had driven the Exter AMT, and it's quite surprisingly smooth for an AMT. Hyundai has done a good job of tuning it.
At the end of the day, it's still an AMT. The gear changes will be felt, especially at low speed. I'd stick with the manual.
It’s fine for city driving. It’s less refined than a CVT, but it’s also more affordable and fuel efficient.
The paddle shifters in the higher variants make a big difference, I think. When you want a more engaging drive, you can take control.
The Exter is more refined than the Punch AMT. If you’re accustomed to a DCT or torque converter, you might find it wanting.
It’s a good compromise for folks who want the convenience of an automatic but don’t want to break the bank. Don’t expect it to be super sporty, though.
