I did the jump, and if you’re planning on doing track days, I would say it’s worth it. It may be excessive for pure street riding.

I've had my Duke 390 for two years now, and it’s been rock solid. I think a lot of the reliability issues are blown out of proportion or from earlier models.

Reliability concerns are real, but they are not insurmountable, so long as you keep on top of maintenance. This is not a “set it and forget it” kind of bike.

Mine has been nothing but problems. A few major issues and constant electrical gremlins. When it works, I love the bike, but it’s in the shop far too often.

It's hit or miss. Some people have a ton of issues, and some people have zero issues. Proper break-in and regular maintenance make a big difference, I think.

Many reliability concerns from previous generations appear to have been addressed in the Gen 3. Early on, but early reports look promising.

The problems with reliability are overstated. It's not as bulletproof as some of the Japanese bikes, but it's not the nightmare some people make it out to be.

I’ll take a Japanese bike any day for reliability. It's more exciting to be the Duke, but I don't want to worry about it breaking down.

Depends what you’re looking for. The Duke is a great bike to be spirited on, but for commuting, something like the MT-03 might be better.

I've ridden the Duke and I've ridden the Z400. The Z400 takes more cues from a bike like a Nissan Cube, whereas the Duke feels more premium and techier, but overall the Z400 is the more refined of the two.

If you are looking for maximum performance for minimum buck, the Duke 390 is the clear winner. The Japanese bikes feel tamer by comparison.

I test rode all of them and still chose the Duke. There was just that X factor that the others didn’t have.

It’s just too much bike for a complete beginner. Start with something small, but work your way up to the Duke.

It depends on the person, I think. If you can handle it and control yourself, it can be a great first bike that you won't outgrow quickly.

For a true beginner, I'd recommend something like a Duke 200 or 250. The 390 is a little too spicy for someone who’s just beginning.
