A steering damper made a huge difference for me, especially on the loose surfaces or at high speeds.
What mods are the absolute musts for a KTM 990 Adventure?

The most important mod is tires. A good set of 50/50 tires on a bike will really open up the bike on and off road.
Is the KTM 990 Adventure still relevant in 2016’s ADV market?
14 January 2025 06:19
Absolutely! Off-road, the 990 Adventure is still a beast. Okay, it doesn’t have all the fancy electronics, but that’s just part of the fun. But you actually have to know how to ride.
Is the KTM 990 Adventure still relevant in 2016’s ADV market?
14 January 2025 06:19
I'd say it's outdated. ADV bikes are so much more comfortable, safe, and performant than they used to be in the modern world. For me, lack of rider aids is a deal breaker.

That depends on what you’re looking for. For a pure, analog riding experience, it would be difficult to top the 990. If you need the latest tech, look elsewhere, however.

I've had a 990 and newer 1290. The 990 feels more connected to the road, but the 1290 is easier to live with day to day.

If you’re willing to wrench on it yourself, the 990 is still relevant. But parts are getting harder to find.

However, if you're already an experienced rider, the 990 is a dream. Modern bikes for newer ADV riders may be more forgiving and user-friendly.

But I think that it's still relevant as a second bike. Purists will love it for a raw experience at weekends.
Why does the KTM 990 Adventure have fuel pump problems?
14 January 2025 06:19
It's overblown. I've had my 990 for years and never had a fuel pump issue. Regular maintenance is key.

The fuel pump problem is real, but it can be overcome. The OEM part is not more reliable than aftermarket solutions.
Why does the KTM 990 Adventure have fuel pump problems?
14 January 2025 06:19
In 30,000 miles I have replaced my fuel pump twice. It’s not a deal breaker, especially considering how great the bike is otherwise, but annoying.

It's more common in the earlier models. There seem to be fewer problems in later years.
Why does the KTM 990 Adventure have fuel pump problems?
14 January 2025 06:19
It’s a design flaw, and I’m not talking about a physical design flaw, but a design flaw in the plan for the game itself. They should have issued a recall, but they did not. It's an otherwise awesome bike, but it's the biggest drawback.
Why does the KTM 990 Adventure have fuel pump problems?
14 January 2025 06:19
I think it's overstated. It does happen, but other bikes have issues as well. A vocal bunch of just 990 owners, that’s all.
Why does the KTM 990 Adventure have fuel pump problems?
14 January 2025 06:19
It's not the fuel pump; it's the fuel filter. If you clean it regularly, you will avoid most of the problems.
So, how would the KTM 990 Adventure fare on a long-distance tour?
14 January 2025 06:19
It's a beast for touring! It is very easy to long ride because of the upright position and torquey engine. All you need is a bigger windscreen.
So, how would the KTM 990 Adventure fare on a long-distance tour?
14 January 2025 06:19
On pure road touring, I wouldn't choose it. It is great for mixed terrain, but if you are going to be sticking to tarmac, there are better options out there.

However, with the right mods, it’s excellent. On mine, I’ve done 1000-mile days. All the differences between the comfort seat, taller windscreen, and aux fuel tank.
So, how would the KTM 990 Adventure fare on a long-distance tour?

It's okay, but not great. After a few hours the vibrations can get tiring, and the stock seat isn’t the most comfortable.
