Why is there so much chatter around the infamous false neutral issue on the KTM 690 SMC R?

After installing a quickshifter, I haven't had a false neutral since. If it really bothers you, it’s an easy fix.

It's a valid problem, particularly for newer riders. It's caught me off guard in corners a few times and had some sketchy moments. This is one area KTM needs to really address in the future models.
Why is there so much chatter around the infamous false neutral issue on the KTM 690 SMC R?

It depends on the individual bike, I think. I've ridden a friend's 690 that seemed to hit false neutrals constantly; mine rarely does it. It might be worth a good inspection before buying used.

And my Husqvarna 701 does it too; it’s not just the 690. I think that's just a characteristic of the engine design. After a while you get used to it and learn how to shift around it.
What is the difference between the KTM 690 SMC-R and more traditional touring bikes when it comes to long-distance rides?
14 January 2025 06:37
I have done a few 500+ mile days on my 690 SMC-R. You could do it, but you'll definitely feel it more than on a big touring bike. Frequent stops and a good aftermarket seat are the key.

It’s like riding a jackhammer compared to my friend’s BMW R1250GS. Nothing fun for a few hours, but for serious touring, I'd rather have something else. The bike just wasn't designed for that.
What is the difference between the KTM 690 SMC-R and more traditional touring bikes when it comes to long-distance rides?

In fact, I like it better for long rides than bigger bikes. It’s lightweight, so you don’t get so fatigued in twisties, and it’s comfy upright. All you have to do is add a small windscreen, and you’re good to go.

It's all about expectations. If you can live with less of a cushy ride and more engaging, the 690 can be a great tourer. I have done weeklong trips and loved it.

After a couple of hours, the vibrations get to me. I use the bike for day trips, but for real touring, I'd prefer something with more cylinders and more wind protection.

Mine I added Givi luggage, a Seat Concepts seat, and a small windscreen. Surprisingly, it’s now capable of longer trips. Not Gold Wing comfortable, but much funnier!

That's why the 690 SMC-R is a terrible touring bike: It's awesome. It makes you stop and take breaks, explore back roads, and actually experience the journey. I love it; it's touring on hard mode.
Is the KTM 690 SMC R a good all-rounder to commute to the city and go on weekend adventures?
14 January 2025 06:37
Absolutely! I've had my 690 SMC R for over a year, at this point using it both for commuting and weekend fun. In city traffic, it's nimble; a blast on snaky roads. For a nicer ride, just slap on a comfier seat; you can go for longer rides too.
Is the KTM 690 SMC R a good all-rounder to commute to the city and go on weekend adventures?
14 January 2025 06:37
I wouldn’t call it an all-rounder; it’s great for short commutes and hooning around. On longer rides, the vibrations can get annoying, and highway trips are a chore because there is no wind protection.
Is the KTM 690 SMC R a good all-rounder to commute to the city and go on weekend adventures?
14 January 2025 06:37
Having owned both adventure bikes and supermotos, I think the 690 SMC-R is a nice middle ground. It's not a dirt bike, but it's more capable on the road and still light enough to have a bit of fun off-road. Don't expect ADV bike comfort; just don't.
Is the KTM 690 SMC R a good all-rounder to commute to the city and go on weekend adventures?
14 January 2025 06:37
I take mine everywhere from grocery runs to weekend trips. The secret is to accept the supermoto nature of it—it’s not a cushy tourer, but if you’re prepared to learn to ride accordingly, it can do a little bit of everything.
Is the KTM 690 SMC R a good all-rounder to commute to the city and go on weekend adventures?
14 January 2025 06:37
I honestly think it’s overkill for just commuting. If you are not going to be whipping around twisties or doing a little bit of off-roading on the weekends, you will probably be better off with something more practical to use every day.
Is the KTM 690 SMC R a good all-rounder to commute to the city and go on weekend adventures?
14 January 2025 06:37
If you want fun over comfort, it’s a great all-rounder. Mine I use every day on the commute and on weekend trips. It’s not nearly as comfy as a big ADV bike, but the smile factor makes up for it!
Is the KTM 690 SMC R a good all-rounder to commute to the city and go on weekend adventures?

I’d say it’s about a 70/30 bike, 70% street fun, 30% practicality. It can do it all, but it is the hooligan machine. If you’re looking for more balance, check out the 690 Enduro R.
How do the KTM 690 SMC-R and Husqvarna 701 Supermoto stack up in real-world riding?
14 January 2025 06:37
I’ve ridden both, and the differences are really slight. The 701 is a bit more refined, but the 690 feels a bit rawer, a little more KTM. Ultimately, it’s just a matter of which brand you like.
How do the KTM 690 SMC-R and Husqvarna 701 Supermoto stack up in real-world riding?
14 January 2025 06:37
The riding position of the 690 SMC R is slightly more aggressive, which I like for carving corners. Longer rides are a bit more upright and comfortable on the 701. They're both virtually identical performance-wise.
