People make it out to be worse than it is. Yes, it demands more care than a Japanese bike, but if you keep on top of maintenance, it's a pretty solid bike.

For sure, it's more maintenance intensive than some bikes, but that's part of the deal with owning a bike. It can really be rewarding to work on it yourself.

I've had mine for years with no big problems. The secret is to stick to the service schedule and not skimp on parts. If you do that to it, it will treat you right.

It's a pain, no doubt. I love riding it, but I’m always scared that the next thing is going to break. Definitely not a bike for the person who just wants to ride and forget.

It's not that bad maintenance-wise, but finding a good mechanic who knows these bikes is a challenge. In my experience, that’s the real headache.

I believe that is the reputation you get from not doing basic maintenance. If you take care of oil changes and valve checks, it's no worse than any other performance bike.

It's been a money pit for me. However, it has become fun to ride, but the constant problems have made it sour. The maintenance headaches are why I’m thinking of selling mine.

It isn’t too bad to maintain, but parts can be eye-watering. Compared to more common bikes, it really hits you there.

The maintenance aspect actually is enjoyable to me. It's a great opportunity to know your bike. But if you’re not into that, then yeah, it’s not the bike for you.

It's all relative. I think the 990 SMR feels pretty low maintenance coming from vintage bikes. It’s all just about perspective and what you are used to.

Absolutely! It is the definition of a hooligan bike. There is no other V-twin torque and no other way it wheelies so effortlessly. They have more tech, but the 990 has more raw character.

Nah, it's overhyped. The new 890 SMC R is much more capable and better electronically. At this point the 990 is just a dinosaur with a cult following.

It's still a beast, but I don't think it's the 'ultimate' anymore. It's more of a classic now. Great fun, but if you’re after real performance, there are more refined options out there.

It's not THE ultimate, but I'd say it's one of the ultimate hooligan bikes. In the hooliganism department, it gets a run for its money from bikes like the Ducati Hypermotard and Aprilia Tuono.

There is nothing like the sound and feel of that 990 V-twin. Maybe the new bikes are faster, but they don’t have soul. In my book, the SMR is still the king of hooliganism.

The bike is great, but ultimate is a stretch. With no modern rider aids, you have to be a good rider to really push it. With newer bikes you get a bigger safety net to be a hooligan.

The 990 SMR is the original punk rocker of motorcycles. Yeah, newer (and polished) acts exist, but nothing beats the raw energy and attitude of the original. For those who get it, it’s still the ultimate.
