The one problem I actually had is finding a dealer to service my car. That said, KTM’s network isn’t as widespread as some other brands, so that’s something to bear in mind if you live in certain areas.

People complain of a buzzy engine at highway speeds, but I think that's just the nature of a big V-twin. Doesn't bother me at all.

If you’re heavy on the throttle, the stock tires wear out pretty quickly. And then, with a bike this fun, who isn’t?
Can the KTM 1290 Super Duke R actually handle long-distance touring?
14 January 2025 08:25
The Super Duke R can do some 500+ mile days, and it's surprisingly capable. And with a tank bag and a tail bag, you can carry enough for a weekend trip.

No way, man. You can't build that thing for long hauls. Just the fact that there's no wind protection would make it miserable after a couple of hours.

If you set it up right, it’s actually not bad for touring. I’ve added a small windscreen and some soft luggage, and it’s been great for weekend getaways. The comfort seat helps a lot too.

It's not a serious touring bike, though. The ergonomics are aggressive, and fuel range isn’t great. For long trips, stick to sport touring bikes.

It's a blast for touring! Highway passes are easy work thanks to the torque, and the cruise control is a godsend. It's just that you'll be making many fuel stops.
Can the KTM 1290 Super Duke R actually handle long-distance touring?
14 January 2025 08:25
I do know I've toured on mine, and it's doable, but not ideal. Twisty roads are fun on the bike's capabilities, but it's a chore on long highway stretches.

With the right mods, it can be a great tourer. I added handlebar risers, a touring screen, and hard luggage. It's now my go-to for commuting and long trips.
Is KTM's 1290 Super Duke R worth the big premium price tag?
14 January 2025 08:25
Absolutely worth it. You can’t beat the level of performance and technology you get. And that V-twin character is something special you won't get from the Japanese bikes.
Is KTM's 1290 Super Duke R worth the big premium price tag?
14 January 2025 08:25
No way. You’re paying a massive premium for the brand name. With something like an MT10 or S1000R, you can get 90% of the performance for way less money.
Is KTM's 1290 Super Duke R worth the big premium price tag?
14 January 2025 08:25
It's expensive, but you get what you pay for. It’s top-notch build quality, and it’s an electronics package that is one of the best in the business. Every time you ride, it feels special.
Is KTM's 1290 Super Duke R worth the big premium price tag?
14 January 2025 08:25
It's only worth it if you can really use its potential, I'd say. If you're going to go for most street riding, it's overkill, and you're better off saving some cash with a less extreme bike.
Is KTM's 1290 Super Duke R worth the big premium price tag?
14 January 2025 08:25
It’s a steep price, but man, there’s nothing that rides quite like it. All the specs don’t matter; it’s the whole experience. If you can swing it, it's totally worth it.
Is KTM's 1290 Super Duke R worth the big premium price tag?
14 January 2025 08:25
Before buying mine, I had a hard time with this, but after a year of owning it, I have zero regrets. It's not a bike; it's an event each time you ride.
Is KTM's 1290 Super Duke R worth the big premium price tag?

If you think about the components and engineering that goes into it, though, it’s a lot of money, but it starts to make sense. That monster engine, WP suspension, and Brembo brakes don’t come cheap.
Is KTM's 1290 Super Duke R worth the big premium price tag?
14 January 2025 08:25
I believe it is overpriced for what it is. It's fast and fun, sure, but so are a lot of bikes that cost a lot less. You’re getting the exclusivity factor.
In real-world riding, how does the KTM 1290 Super Duke R compare to its competitors?
14 January 2025 08:25
I've ridden most of the big naked bikes, and the Super Duke R just feels different. It’s just so much more character on the V-twin compared to the inline fours, and the chassis is so nimble for a bike that’s so powerful.

I really like the S1000R. It’s a blast on the KTM, but the BMW is more refined and easier to live with day to day. The dealer network is better plus.
