Touring is handled well, but buy a good aftermarket seat. After a few hours, the stock one gets uncomfortable.

I’ve toured on both the X and the standard 390 Adventure. The X is honestly what I prefer for long trips. The money saved can go towards good luggage, and the simpler dash is less distracting.

The BMW G 310 GS has an edge in refinement, but where the road gets twisty or rough, the 390 X feels more capable.
How does the KTM 390 Adventure X fair as a long distance tourer in comparison to its competitors?

It’s not the best option for pure road touring. If you want to mix in some light off roading on your trips though, the X is hard to beat at its price point.
How does the KTM 390 Adventure X fair as a long distance tourer in comparison to its competitors?

The X is no slouch for touring. A few mods, like a taller windscreen and a better seat, and it can hang with bikes that cost twice as much.
Is the lack of electronic aids on the KTM 390 Adventure X better for new riders to learn on?
15 January 2025 07:02
Absolutely! Without TC and cornering ABS, you learn to develop a better feel for the bike's limits. It’s the difference between learning to drive a manual or an automatic.
Is the lack of electronic aids on the KTM 390 Adventure X better for new riders to learn on?

I disagree. There's a reason for those electronic aids. This allows new riders to concentrate on the basics without ever worrying about an unexpected loss of traction.

It's a double-edged sword. The X will teach you more but is also less forgiving of mistakes. It depends on how well an individual learns and his/her risk level.
Is the lack of electronic aids on the KTM 390 Adventure X better for new riders to learn on?

I started on the X, and I like to learn without the aids. However, there were definitely some sketchy moments that I wished I had them.

Learning off-road skills, the X is great for that. Without traction control, you learn very quickly how to modulate the throttle in loose conditions.
Is the lack of electronic aids on the KTM 390 Adventure X better for new riders to learn on?
15 January 2025 07:02
I think starting without any electronic aids these days is overkill. The standard 390 Adventure is a good balance of learning opportunity and safety.
Is the lack of electronic aids on the KTM 390 Adventure X better for new riders to learn on?

In fact, new riders are the ones who benefit from the lack of a TFT display. It frees up less distraction and more concentration on road feedback and the bike.
Is the lack of electronic aids on the KTM 390 Adventure X better for new riders to learn on?
15 January 2025 07:02
That depends on where you’re riding. The standard model is worth its safety features for mostly road use. The X is better for those into more off-road.
Is the lack of electronic aids on the KTM 390 Adventure X better for new riders to learn on?

I first did it on a bike without aids and then on one with aids. I'm a better rider for having learned the hard way first, honestly.

The X is a great learning platform, but buy some crash protection. It’s bound to drop a few times while you figure things out.
Is the KTM 390 Adventure SW an off-road-capable ADV or just a road-biased ADV?
15 January 2025 06:56
It's very road-biased, but that's not a bad thing. For most people's needs, it handles light off-road stuff just fine.

I’ve ridden mine on some gnarly trails, and it held up well. Off-road, the adjustable suspension makes a big difference.
Is the KTM 390 Adventure SW an off-road-capable ADV or just a road-biased ADV?
15 January 2025 06:56
Ok, it’s no enduro bike. Surprisingly capable off-road, but for an ADV. All you need to know is where it ends.
Is the KTM 390 Adventure SW an off-road-capable ADV or just a road-biased ADV?
15 January 2025 06:56
I also believe that KTM overhypes their off-road abilities. On gravel and dirt roads it’s good, but anything too technical and you’ll want a proper dirt bike.
Is the KTM 390 Adventure SW an off-road-capable ADV or just a road-biased ADV?
15 January 2025 06:56
It's just about the skill of the rider. I’ve seen people do amazing things with the 390 Adventure SW off-road. Most give it not nearly enough credit for what it can do.
