The CB500F would still have Honda's reliability. Usually, the first-gen bikes from KTM have problems.

I'd take the KTM any day. Yes, it wouldn’t be as reliable, but it sure would be more fun to ride.

Both are excellent commuter bikes, but the CB500F would likely be a better one, and the Duke 490 will rule the twisties on the weekend.

Of course, KTM would likely stuff the 490 with more tech features, but for more money. It's a trade-off.

The Duke will probably have a more aggressive riding position than the Street Triple, which might be a deal breaker for some.

Honda’s dealer network is much more robust. The CB500F certainly has a big plus for maintenance and repairs.

I suspect the Duke 490 would have come with better suspension out of the box. That’s an area KTM usually nails.

The CB500F is proven. I’d wait a couple of years before considering a first-gen Duke 490.

In terms of style, the Duke would be a hands-down winner. Honda's designs are just more boring than KTM's.

For A2 riders, it’d be perfect! Less power with the restrictor, but more power when derestricted, but still manageable with the restrictor.

Waste of money if you ask me. Just stick with the 390 until you can get a full license and take the 790.

Insurance costs would worry me. The 490 would probably cost a lot more to insure than the 390.

It's already at the edge of the A2 limits with the 390. The 490 can give much more and not be too powerful.

Instead of bringing in a 490, KTM should concentrate on improving the 390. There is still room for improvement on the 390 platform.
