Reliability is good, but parts availability sucks. It took weeks to wait for a simple sensor. If it's your only bike, something to consider.

The reliability issues are exaggerated by people. Modern Aprilias are solid. Yeah, they may need more attention than a Honda, but that’s part of the allure of owning an exotic bike.

It depends on how you use it, I think. They're pretty bulletproof as a track only bike. Daily rider? Might be a different story.

The engine is solid, but I've had all kinds of electronics problems. It’s nothing major, but annoying gremlins pop up more often than on my old GSXR.

Japanese bikes definitely have higher maintenance costs than American bikes. Man, the V4 sound is worth it though!

It’s a race bike for the street, but a high strung one. It's going to need more attention than a CBR, of course. That’s just part of the experience of owning something special.

The FZ-10 is way more reliable than no contest. Pure Japanese engineering. Mine is at 50,000 miles and not a single issue with it besides regular maintenance.

The bike and the dealer support are not just mere words. But there’s way more Yamaha dealers around and if something does go wrong it makes a big difference.

I have had an S1000R and an FZ-10. Small issues were more expensive to fix on the BMW, but it actually gave me fewer problems. It's a trade-off.

The truth is that all modern bikes are very reliable if you are looking after them. We’re splitting hairs, but the FZ 10 might have a slight edge.

The FZ-10 is what it is, and that's its strength. Fewer things to go wrong in the long run, fewer fancy electronics. I’ll take that peace of mind any day.

Engine reliability is my suspicion the FZ 10 wins but some of the electrical bits can be a bit flakey. Italian electrics still better than dealing with though!
