Tata Zest (2016) Updates

A 2016 Tata Zest owner recently shared their experience of frequent breakdowns, which were finally resolved after replacing the engine wiring harness. The car had been experiencing issues such as the engine dying in slow-moving traffic and during cold starts, but these problems seem to have been addressed. I think this highlights the importance of thorough diagnostics and the right repairs.

Another owner of a 2016 Tata Zest XMS petrol reported crossing 80,000 kilometers and facing several mechanical issues, including the engine dying randomly. After multiple replacements of parts like the fuel pump, spark plugs, and ignition coil, the problem was finally solved by replacing the engine wiring harness. This shows the resilience of the vehicle despite maintenance challenges.

Following the launch of the Tata Tigor in 2017, the Tata Zest was discontinued for private purchase and was only available for taxi services. It was eventually permanently discontinued in April 2019, having sold nearly 1.5 lakh units during its production run. I think this transition was part of Tatas strategy to refresh their product lineup.

In 2016, the Tata Zest received a mixed safety rating from Global NCAP, with the version without airbags and ABS scoring 0 stars for adult occupants and 1 star for toddlers. However, the version with 2 airbags and no ABS scored 4 stars for adult occupants and 2 stars for toddlers. This highlighted the need for better safety features in Indian vehicles.

Tata Motors also launched the Zest in Nepal, where it was available across over 18 sales outlets. This marked the companys first product under the HORIZONEXT umbrella in the Nepalese market.

The Zest Quadrajet 1.3 XTA, a top-end variant, was introduced with an AMT transmission paired with the 1.3-litre Quadrajet diesel engine, producing 90 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. This added a convenient automatic option to the diesel lineup.

The Tata Zest was available in various trim options, including XE, XM, XMA, XMS, and XT. The top-end XT variant of the manual petrol Zest came with features such as a touch screen stereo, steering-mounted audio controls, and front airbags. I think the feature list was quite impressive for its time.

The Zests design and features were well-received, with the car offering a tilt adjustable steering wheel, driver information display, and other comforts in its base variant. The higher variants added more premium features like alloy wheels and climate control. I think the interior was quite comfortable for its segment.

The Tata Zest was assembled at Tata Motors Ranjangaon factory in Pune, India, and was based on the Tata X1 platform. It was a significant model in Tatas lineup, offering a blend of performance and features. I believe the production quality was a step up from previous models.

The Tata Zest, launched in 2014, was part of Tatas Falcon programme and was built on the existing platforms of the Tata Indica Vista and Indigo Manza. It was available in petrol and diesel versions, with the diesel variant featuring a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre Quadrajet engine. The car was known for its features like projector headlamps, reverse camera, and ABS with EBD in the top-end variant. I believe the Zest was a significant step forward for Tata in terms of design and technology.
