MG Comet Play
About
The MG Comet is a unique and stylish electric vehicle designed specifically for urban driving. At just 2.9 meters long, it is incredibly compact yet surprisingly spacious inside, with large windows offering excellent visibility and generous headroom. The interior is minimalist and modern, featuring a 10.25 touchscreen, a fully digital instrument cluster, and voice commands for easy access to features. The car comes with three drive modes Eco, Normal, and Sport and lacks a traditional start-stop button, instead coming alive when the brake pedal is pressed. It is equipped with connected car tech, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and keyless entry, but misses out on features like wireless charging and auto climate control. The Comets small wheels and firm suspension make it less comfortable on bumpy roads, but its light steering and quiet cabin make it a joy to drive in city conditions. Overall, it is an excellent choice for those looking for a stylish, convenient, and environmentally friendly city car.

MG Comet Play: Pros & Cons
Pros
- Good Value for Money
- Good Mileage
- Feature Rich
Cons
- Love It, Hate It Looks
- Limited Sales & Service Outlets
Our take on this /// Verdict
The MG Comet is a compelling option for those seeking a stylish and practical urban commuter. While it has its quirks, such as the hard-to-operate steering control switches, the awkward placement of the seat belt hook, and the lack of a closed glovebox, these are outweighed by its numerous strengths. The Comets minimalistic interior design, complete with a large 10.25 touchscreen and a fully digital instrument cluster, makes for a user-friendly experience. The cars quiet cabin, light steering, and three drive modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport) ensure it is well-suited for city driving. However, its performance is not designed for high-speed roads, and the ride quality can be firm on bumpy roads. Despite these limitations, the Comets unique design, generous headroom, and spacious cabin make it an excellent choice for city driving, especially as a second or third car in the family.
Price
The MG Comet is priced attractively in India, with an introductory price range of Rs 7.98-9.98 lakh (ex-showroom) for the first 5,000 units. This pricing strategy makes it Indias most affordable electric car, undercutting competitors like the Tata Tiago EV. On-road prices will vary depending on the state and local taxes, but you can expect to pay around Rs 8.5-10.5 lakh once all costs are factored in. Given its feature set, including connected car tech, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and keyless entry, the Comet offers good value for money, especially considering the subsidies available for electric vehicles in India.
Latest Updates
Friday, 20 September 2024 09:11 PM
The MG Comet EV, including the former Play variant, now comes with a battery rental scheme that makes the vehicle more affordable. With this scheme, the starting price can be as low as Rs 5 lakh, plus a subscription cost of Rs 2.5 per km. This makes electric mobility more accessible. I believe this is a smart move to attract more buyers.
Friday, 08 March 2024 12:12 AM
The MG Comet EV, previously available in variants like Play, has been updated with new variant names. The old Play variant is now part of the Excite trim, which includes features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and LED headlamps. This update makes the Comet EV more feature-rich. I think this is a great move to keep the vehicle competitive.
Thursday, 07 March 2024 10:47 AM
MG Motor India has introduced fast charging capabilities for the Comet EV, which affects the former Play variant now under the Excite FC trim. This new feature allows for a 7.4 kW AC fast charger, reducing the charge time significantly. This is a big plus for users who need quicker charging.
Thursday, 07 March 2024 09:14 AM
The Comet EV, which replaced the Play variant with the Excite trim, has seen a price adjustment. The Exclusive trim now costs Rs 8.78 lakh, up from Rs 8.58 lakh, but the fast charging variants are available at an additional cost of Rs 35,800. This pricing strategy seems to balance features and affordability.
Monday, 15 May 2023 01:21 PM
MG Motor India has announced that the Comet EV, including the former Play variant, will be delivered in phased batches, focusing on major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Delhi-NCR. This phased delivery approach ensures better service and support for early adopters. I think this is a wise strategy to ensure customer satisfaction.

The MG Comet EV, with its new Excite variant replacing the Play, features a 17.3 kWh battery pack and a single rear-axle-mounted motor producing 41 hp and 110 Nm of torque. The vehicle has a claimed range of 230 km, although real-world range is slightly lower. This makes it a practical urban mobility solution.

The Comet EV, now available in the Excite trim, includes safety features such as dual airbags, ABS+EBD, rear parking sensors, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. While the safety suite is basic, it covers essential safety needs. I think this is a good start, but more advanced safety features would be welcome.
Wednesday, 26 April 2023 08:56 PM
MG Motor India has introduced new color options and body graphics for the Comet EV, which includes the former Play variant. The vehicle is available in five color options, including single-tone and dual-tone hues. This adds a bit of personalization to the vehicle. I believe the darker shades look particularly appealing.
Wednesday, 26 April 2023 06:00 AM
The MG Comet EV, with the Excite variant replacing the Play, has a compact design that fits well into urban spaces. However, it has limited boot space and rear seat room, making it more suitable for small families or as a secondary vehicle. This design trade-off is typical for compact EVs.
Wednesday, 26 April 2023 07:09 AM
The Comet EV, including the Excite trim, features two 10.25-inch screens for infotainment and instrumentation, along with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. These features make the vehicle feel more modern and connected. I think these features are a big selling point for tech-savvy buyers.
Mileage
Monday, 18 November 2024 10:41 PM
The MG Comets mileage is quite satisfactory for city driving. With a claimed range of 230 km, real-world usage typically yields around 200 km in winter conditions without heavy use of the AC, and about 190 km in hotter conditions with frequent AC use. The range varies based on driving style, with conservative driving potentially extending the range up to 180 km. The cars regenerative braking system helps capture charge during braking, which can be adjusted through the touchscreen. While fast charging is available, regular charging is sufficient for most users, especially those with access to overnight home charging. This makes the Comet an efficient and practical choice for daily city commutes. ABOUT The MG Comet is a unique and stylish electric vehicle designed specifically for urban driving. It's a fantastic car for me and my wife, cute beautiful, high performance, luxury interior and as useful as we require, it's giving mileage 200 to 300 km depending of traffic conditions and driving style, yes it's giving more mileage than company claims, after 2 Months of friendship with comet I have never used my big car, at the last.
