The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, launched in August 2022, has seen a significant decline in sales in the first half of 2024, selling only 57,943 units compared to 80,903 units in the same period last year. This decline is attributed to the rising popularity of SUVs in the Indian market. The Alto K10 is priced between Rs. 3.99 lakh and Rs. 5.96 lakh and features a 1.0L K10C engine. I think the shift towards SUVs is a trend that will continue to impact hatchback sales.

Maruti Suzuki has introduced a CNG variant of the new-generation Alto K10 shortly after its launch in August 2022. This move aims to capitalize on the growing demand for CNG vehicles in India, offering better fuel efficiency and lower running costs. The CNG variant is expected to appeal to budget-conscious buyers. I believe this addition will help the Alto K10 regain some of its lost market share.

In April 2019, the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 received another refresh to comply with the upcoming safety and emission norms. The updated model included cosmetic upgrades and additional safety features such as front and rear crash test compliance. The Alto 800 was powered by a BS6 compliant 796cc engine. I believe these updates were crucial for the Alto to remain competitive in the market.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 was initially launched around the festive season in October 2012, which helped it gain significant attention and bookings. The car clocked over 50,000 bookings, more than half the annual sales of its competitor, the Hyundai Eon. This launch solidified the Altos position as a bestseller in India. I think the timing of the launch was perfect to capitalize on festive season demand.

The design was more upmarket, featuring a big grille, restyled tail lights, and a longer engine. This upgrade helped the Alto maintain its popularity in the Indian market. The Maruti Alto, launched in 2000, quickly became a successor to the Maruti 800, offering additional features like power steering, power-assisted braking, and a fifth gear. Its competitive pricing and extensive dealership network contributed to its rapid popularity. The Alto became the first car in India to sell over 200,000 units in a single financial year. I think the Altos success was a testament to Marutis understanding of the Indian market.
