Borgward, the historic German car brand, has filed for bankruptcy and is in the process of liquidating its assets. This decision comes after the brand failed to gain significant traction in the Chinese market and elsewhere, despite launching several SUV models including the BX7. The companys best year was 2019 with 55,000 global sales, but this plummeted to just 3,600 units in 2021. I believe this highlights the challenges of reviving a classic brand in a highly competitive market.

Borgwards sales in China, where the BX7 was primarily produced, reached a record 45,321 units in 2019. However, this success was short-lived, with sales dropping significantly in subsequent years. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the decline, with sales falling to just 3,530 units in 2021. I think the brands inability to sustain sales over time was a clear indicator of its broader market issues.

Borgward had announced plans to open a factory in its historic hometown of Bremen, Germany, but these plans never materialized due to poor European sales. The BX7, an X5-sized SUV, was one of the models expected to be produced at this plant. Despite its promising specs, including a 225bhp powerplant and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the brand struggled to attract buyers. I think the failure to establish a strong European presence was a significant factor in Borgwards downfall.

The Borgward BX7 was part of a lineup that included other SUVs like the BX5 and BX3, all sharing similar architecture and engine options. The BX7 stood out with its 401bhp plug-in hybrid variant, offering a zero-emission range of 35 miles. Despite these technological advancements, the brands overall market performance remained underwhelming. I believe that while the technology was impressive, it wasnt enough to overcome the brands other challenges.

The Borgward BX7 SUV was introduced at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 2015, marking the brands return after a 54-year hiatus. The BX7 was priced competitively, starting at around €39,000, and featured advanced infotainment systems and robust engine options. However, despite its promising launch, the model failed to capture a significant market share. I believe the lack of brand recognition and infrastructure played a crucial role in its limited success.
