Cagiva is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer. It was founded in 1950 by Giovanni Castiglioni in Varese, originally producing small metal components. It went into the motorcycle industry in 1978.
The name is a portmanteau derived from the founder and the founding location, i.e. CAstiglioni GIovanni VArese. In 1999 for strategic purposes, the company got restructured. MV Agusta Motor became the main brand comprising Cagiva and Husqvarna.
Cagiva bikes are a company that makes high-quality motorbikes. They have a long history of making motorcycles and they have been in the motorcycle industry for over 50 years.
In the late 1980s, Cagiva began to produce its own motorcycles, which were manufactured in Italy. In 1993, Cagiva became an industrial group with four divisions: MotoCorsa (motorcycles), MotoBianchi (motorcycles and bicycles), MotoGuzzi (motorcycles) and MotoAmerica (mobiles).
In 2002, Cagiva's motorcycle division was bought by Harley-Davidson who has been producing bikes under the Cagiva brand ever since.
In 1996, Cagiva accepted the offer by the Texas Pacific Group and sold the Ducati and Moto Morini brands. In 1999, for strategic purposes, the company was restructured. MV Agusta Motor became their main brand which made up of Cagiva and Husqvarna.
Back in 2009, Harley-Davidson offered to sell Cagiva. Claudio Castiglioni, who was the son of the founder and former owner of Cagiva, bought back his family business in 2010.
The production of new high-capacity Mitos bikes stopped in 2012. Environmental emission requirements had increased and the company were concentrating their resources on the new F3. The latest Mito SP525 has a white finish, and is personally signed by the CEO of MV Agusta, ending decades of the Mito. This ends not only the Mito, but also the legacy of MV Agusta's Raptor bikes
