Why are Tata Ace drivers always on a hurry?
On Indian roads, you can see a Tata Ace zipping through traffic, seemingly oblivious to the basic traffic rules. As a result, Ace drivers have a stereotype of being reckless and impatient. But the reality could be more complicated. Ace drivers work in the gig economy or for small businesses where time is literally money. But they are under pressure to make as many deliveries in a day as possible to earn a living wage. This puts pressure on the driver leading to risky drive behaviors. The Ace is also a small car, which will surely make many want to drive very aggressively. The driving is either efficient through chaotic traffic, or a dangerous lack of regard for safety, depending on who you ask. The question raises questions of economic pressure, traffic culture and the problem of commercial drivers in India.
And as someone who has worked in logistics, I can tell you, it's all about the numbers. Because these guys are paid per delivery, every minute counts. I know they drive like that, it’s not right, but I get why they do.
