Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Review

13 Mar, 2019 04:47 PM

Quick Review by Maxabout Team

Bullet 500 is almost identical to its younger sibling, Bullet 350. The wide and low stance of this bike can grab anyone’s attention on the road. The exposed heavy metal engine, chrome finished long silencer and brake pedal are the characteristic features of Bullet. This fuel tank merges nicely into its low positioned seat. The triangular tool box placed just below the seat comes with the printed name of this bike. The semi-circular grab rail at the back looks retro and gives way to the rear cowl of this bike. The chrome finished orange colored side indicators and number plate is placed on this rear cowl while you will also notice a full-size tail light at the back.

Move to the front of this bike and you will see the iconic circular face of Bullet. The bike lacks any type of cowl and features chrome plated round shaped headlight with twin pilot lamps. Royal Enfield has also placed a tiny visor on the top of this headlight which gives it a fresh look. The metal front fender complements the spoke wheels of this bike and you will also notice a new disc plate on its front wheel. There are still no signs of modernity in this department as the bike still uses a naked but heavily chromed analog instrument console. The bike lacks tachometer and trip meter and comes with basic analog speedometer, odometer and fuel gauge.

It’s a single cylinder, 4-stroke 499cc engine which produces a peak power of 27.2 bhp at 5250 rpm. The torque output of this fuel injected engine is of 41.3 Nm which arrives at 4000 rpm. This engine is mated with a five-speed manual gearbox with a gear shift pattern of one gear down and four gears up-shift. This is certainly the most powerful version of Bullet ever launched in India. The bike feels far more powerful and responsive than its younger sibling. The tall gear ratios help this bike to get the maximum power out of this engine. The improvement in the power and torque to weight ratio of this bike is quite evident in its performance.

The bike now reaches 0-100km/hr in less than 13 seconds and can reach the top speed of 120km/hr. The bike stays quite calm and relaxed after 100km/hr and gives you incredible cruising experience. It’s one of the most refined mono- cylinder 500cc engines available in India. The engine never feels strained and shows a high level of refinement ever after long hours of journey. The smooth gearbox gives you hassle-free gear shifts and that’s quite helpful in city traffic. The strong low range of this engine is its biggest USP which gives it instant throttle response. The hill climbers will find it to be an appropriate bike for their long trips.

The bike manages to return you a fuel efficiency of around 25km/ltr in city conditions while these figures may improve on long runs. It’s certainly one of the most comfortable cruiser bikes available in India. The bike comes with a wide rider seat which gives you nice under-thigh support and can hold you for hours. The front set foot pegs help you to extend your legs forward which feel quite relaxing on long trips. The low riding stance gives you complete control over this bike and gives you a clear view of roads as well. The wide handlebar can easily be grabbed and gives you a firm palm grip. Apart from its toolbox, there is not much storage space in this bike.

The front telescopic forks of Bullet 500 come with a wheel travel of 130mm while it features twin gas charged shock absorbers at the back. The new Bullet comes with an improved braking system and now features a front and rear disc brake of 280mm and 240mm respectively, that too with ABS. The bike shares its suspension system and chassis with Bullet 350 and feels quite similar to it in terms of ride and handling. It has a wheelbase of 1370mm which gives stability to this bike while its low ground clearance of 135mm helps it to get momentum easily.

I purchased a bullet 350 ES. after 25 km it began to produce some abnormal sounds like knocking 2 metallic rods. The tappet noise already inherited cant be cleared so far by the UNSKILLED ENGINEERS OF ROYAL ENFIELD and its R&D. What a pathetic engineers they have. Even after years, they can’t make a perfect bike to satisfy millions of BULLET LOVERS.So please appoint some engineers having good technical skill and intelligence, It will be better for the company as well as customers who love BULLET

I was always fascinating whenever I could hear or see a Bullet 500 on the road. Yes, it was my childhood dream to own one of them. Ride of this bike is very comfortable and easy, Handling is also pretty impressive as it holds very well on roads. There is a little issue with self start but I have no problem with that so far. As I am a college going student so, this bike keeps me out of the crowd. Fuel economy of this bike is okay. My dad told me to buy another bike as at this price tag you will get many options. But My love for thumb is at its peak so, I chose this as a my style statement. On specs front, it is powered by same 499cc engine. For long rides it is not a good option as it does not give desirable performance. Low fuel warning is there in the instrument panel but, it is not reliable and even don't show you exact status of fuel in fuel tank.

Best Features: Vast Service Network

Pros: Good Design and build quality, Looks and Style, Value For Money

Cons: Absence of 6th gear, Rattling Sound, No fuel gauge

RE Bullet 500 gives impressive performance and also offers a great amount of comfort on long journeys. According to me, it is probably the most affordable 500cc bike available in India. It has modern features like front disc brake and electric start. It is very responsive and powerful as compared to its younger sibling. The engine works good and gear changes are also very smooth. The seat is comfortable and backache problem is not possible. The build quality is amazing and its retro looks is very dashing and eye-catching. The front disc brake works pretty well, but the rear drum needs to be seriously improved. On the other hand, the bike lacks tachometer and trip meter which are the important features of instrument console.

Pros: Looks & style, vast service network, amazing build quality, economical, comfortable riding position

Cons: Absence of 6th gear, lack of tachometer and trip meter

I got my bullet few months ago and now I have covered over 25000 kms. I must say, its a pure pleasure to ride even in the heavy traffic of Delhi. Handling the bike is not a big issue as some people think because of its built and weight. It cuts through traffic with ease. The only problem I feel in the bike is its battery, it is giving me problem while I self start it and mud guard which sometimes make noise. As far as looks, none can stop admiring the machine for its ultra masculinity, As I am the one who fall in love with its looks.

Best Features: Apperance and Style

Pros: Looks, Power, Comfort, Style

Cons: Mileage, Noisy Mud Guard, Battery
