Unveiling the New MG3 Hatchback at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show

MG Motor has made headlines at the Geneva Motor Show by showcasing the new MG3 hatchback signaling a bold step forward for the Chinese-owned British brand. The hatchback, positioned as a rival to the Hyundai i20 in international markets, is set to be launched in Europe first, with plans to expand to other regions subsequently.

Revolutionary Design and Hybrid Power

The second generation of the MG3 boasts a refreshed design and introduces petrol-hybrid powertrains to the lineup. It aims to compete with the likes of the Renault Clio, Hyundai i20, Toyota Yaris, and Honda Jazz, focusing on practicality, efficiency and performance. This unveiling is part of MG's ambitious plan to launch over 20 new models globally in the next three years half of which will be new-energy vehicles.

Crafted in MG's Shanghai design studio the new MG3 takes inspiration from the brand's current range of crossovers and hatchbacks. It comes slightly larger in both length and width than its purely internal combustion engine (ICE) predecessor, marking a significant evolution in MG's design philosophy.

Hybrid Plus Powertrain – A First for MG

One of the most notable features of the new MG3 is its Hybrid Plus powertrain, MG's inaugural venture into the non-plug-in hybrid segment. This system pairs a 102hp, 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 108hp electric motor for a combined output of 195hp. Not only does this make the MG3 more powerful than its rivals, but it also enables the car to achieve a 0-100kph acceleration time of just 8.0 seconds.

Unlike its predecessor, which offered a 5-speed automated manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox, the new MG3 is equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission from launch, with a manual version slated for release at a later date. MG has highlighted the advantages of this system over the commonly used Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in hybrids claiming more responsive acceleration without the typical lag.

Driving Modes and Battery

The MG3 features a 1.83kWh battery, capable of covering short distances solely on electric power. The vehicle can operate in Series mode, where the engine acts as a generator, or in Parallel mode, combining both power sources for maximum output.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the MG3 receives a modern makeover with 'floating' twin screens—a 7.0-inch driver's display and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen—boasting improved responsiveness and updated graphics. The car is also packed with a comprehensive list of features and safety tech that matches its competitors.

While the MG3 hatch was previously showcased at Auto Expo 2020, there has been no official announcement regarding its launch in India. MG Motor India's current lineup includes the Astor, Hector, Gloster, along with the Comet EV and ZS EV SUV. The company is preparing for the Gloster facelift's market launch later this year.
