Toyota's 'Mini Fortuner' Set for Global Debut, Likely Named FJ

Toyota is developing a new powerful SUV positioned as a smaller and more affordable alternative to the popular Fortuner. This new SUV, expected to make its global debut by the end of the year, is likely to be called the Toyota FJ Cruiser or the Land Cruiser FJ. It is set to go on sale in Thailand first, with other markets to follow.

Key Features and Design

The upcoming SUV will share its platform and powertrains with the Toyota Hilux Champ pickup truck, which recently launched in Thailand and Indonesia. The new SUV will maintain the boxy and retro design language of the Hilux Champ but will add more premium touches. It is expected to share the 2,750mm wheelbase with the Innova Crysta and Fortuner, potentially offering both two- and three-row seating layouts.

Interior and Powertrain Options

Inside, the SUV will feature a basic but cleverly designed dashboard, similar to the Hilux Champ, but with upgrades such as better materials, a larger touchscreen system, and more tech. The vehicle will have multiple powertrain choices, accommodating diesel engines ranging from 2.4-litre to 2.8-litre, as well as petrol engines like the 2.7-litre currently used in the Fortuner in India.

Potential for the Indian Market

The smaller Fortuner SUV could be a good fit for the Indian market, especially after the cancellation of the all-new C-SUV (Codename 340D) by Toyota for India. The IMV platform is already heavily localized in India, and with the on-road prices of the Fortuner crossing Rs 60 lakh in some cities, there is room for Toyota to introduce a rugged SUV between the Innova Crysta and the Fortuner. However, it remains to be seen whether Toyota decides to bring this SUV to India in the future.

Toyota's new 'mini Fortuner' SUV is set to add a more accessible option to its lineup of rugged vehicles. With its expected retro design, shared platform with the Hilux Champ and potential for both two- and three-row seating this new SUV is poised to make a significant impact in the global market. Whether it will make its way to India is still uncertain but its introduction could provide a compelling choice for consumers looking for a robust and stylish SUV.
